Lindley Park and Sunset Hills get a lot of attention as beautiful, historic neighborhoods, and rightly so, but there’s a largely overlooked neighborhood right next to them that has some beautiful and vastly more affordable historic homes. The Brice Street neighborhood has been almost overrun by low-end landlords because of its proximity to UNCG, but you can find some fine homes there as well. When they come up for sale, the trick is getting to them before Greensboro’s voracious “real estate investors” do.
914 Englewood Street is a prime example. A few years ago, it was just a typical run-down rental. Today, it’s a nicely renovated, three-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage with a very nice, distinctive look. With 1,279 square feet, the $189,900 price comes to $148 per square foot, pricey for Brice Street, but the house is in far better shape than many houses that come onto the market in the neighborhood. And still far more affordable than the high-profile neighborhoods nearby.
Englewood Street has some other houses that look much better than the many student rentals nearby. The street, and perhaps Brice Street as a neighborhood, may be showing signs of a brighter future ahead.
The first owner of the house appears to have been Cornelius Blair, a carpenter. He bought it in 1922. After his death in 1934, his wife, Bessie, and then their daughter (presumably) Lucy owned the house until 1984. The 1922 deed was affirmed by a justice of the peace rather than a notary. Did North Carolina even have notaries back then?
