  • “A façade chimney marked by a blind arched brick niche and flanked by rectangular louvered wood vents occupies the front-facing gable. A smaller chimney flue straddles the ridge of the side gable. Windows throughout are nine-over-nine and topped by soldier-course lintels.
  • “Ethel and Dennis Sweeney, who was director of North Carolina Typothetae, a printers association, bought the property in July 1928 and likely built the house soon thereafter. They sold the property in 1931. The Hodgkin family owned the house from 1931 until 1979.”
  • Ralph Edwin Hodgkin (1895-1960) was a chemist. He served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In 1951 the deed was transferred to his wife, Kathryn Elaine Brown Hodgkin (1906-1996). She passed the house on to their son, John Edwin Hodgkin, and his wife, Carol Maria Kypriss Hodgkin, in 1978. They sold the house in 1979.

  • The house has had only three owners. The current owners had it for about nine months before putting it up for sale.
  • District NRHP nomination: “The two-story, three-bay, truncated hip-roofed, brick, Colonial Revival-style dwelling displays a bracketed cornice. A classical portico supported by fluted Doric columns and pilasters is centered on the facade. The flat-roofed portico is topped by a turned balustrade with short, bold, square, corner balusters and graced with molded brackets.
  • The brick porch floor extends the width of the façade and wraps around to the north elevation where a porch with a crowning balustrade is situated. The balustrade displays the same corner posts, but simple square balusters. This porch, like the front portico, has curved brackets along its cornices and fluted columns and pilasters for support, except at the northwest (front) corner where a brick post supports the post.
  • “A one-story wing on the south elevation has the same crowning balustrade as the north porch, as well as the molded brackets on its cornice. It is enclosed with six-over-one windows. Windows elsewhere on the house are eight-over-one.
  • “The Markhams bought the property in December 1927 and likely built the house soon thereafter. He was a structural engineer. The family owned the house until 1980.”
  • John Wellington Markham Sr. (1884-1935) died barely seven years after buying the house. Hassie D. Whitley Markham (1896-1987) continued to live in the house. She sold it in 1979.
  • Robert and Carolyn Clendenin bought the house from Hassie. Robert Amos Clendenin (1932-2016) was a longtime teacher and principal in the Greensboro and Guilford County schools. He served as principal at Bessemer High School, Bessemer Junior High, Aycock Middle School and for more than 20 years principal at Page High School. Carolyn Reid Clendenin (1937-1999) was a music teacher and choral director in the local school systems. Their son, Carter Clendenin, inherited the house from his father and owned it until 2020. He’s a lieutenant with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department.

  • The Carrolls sold the house to Johnsie Glass Keith (1875-1954). Johnsie and her daughter, Blanche Keith Watson (1901-1988), owned it for 40 years. Johnsie was the widow of Flavius Keith (1872-1906).

  • Between them, Charles B. Cohen, a salesman, and his wife, Jessie Browning Cohen, bought the house three times. Both times they sold it, the same person appears to have bought it and then, years later, sold it back to them. Regardless of ownership, Jessie appears to have lived in the house continuously for 57 years, from 1927 until her death in 1984.
    • The Cohens bought the house initially in 1927, the first year the address was listed in the city directory. They sold it in 1931 to Gloria C. Milton but continued to live in the house.
    • Charles and Jessie bought it back from her in 1940. Later that year, the property was transferred to Jessie’s sole ownership. She continued to live there, including some number of years with her second husband, Dewitt Cheek, a traveling salesman.
    • In 1960, Jessie, now widowed, sold the house to Gloria Milton Pemberton, now of Montreal, Quebec. Again, Jessie continued to live in the house.
    • In 1983, Jessie bought the house back again, this time with Jack Milton Jr. The next year, Jessie passed away at age 94. Jack Milton sold the house in 1987 to Robert Lock, millionaire publishing entrepreneur and founder of the legendary Compute! magazine.

  • District NRHP nomination: “The two-and-a-half-story, three-bay, side-gabled with returns, brick Colonial Revival-style dwelling with a one-story, flat-roofed, classical portico supported by Tuscan columns and topped with a truncated wood balustrade. The portico shelters a multi-light door. The portico repeats on the north elevation where it shelters a secondary entrance; triangular braces support this portico.
  • “Two front-gabled dormers with returns are sheathed in a smooth-coat stucco. An interior corbelled brick chimney rises from the roof ridge. Windows are six-over-one and topped with soldier-course brick lintels. A pineapple motif perforates each wood shutter.
  • “A one-story, flat-roofed sunroom is located on the south end. It likely originally served as an open porch, but was later enclosed and sheathed with hardboard siding. It features modern one-over-one windows and a fully-glazed door with fully-glazed sidelights.”

  • The original owner appears to have been Edwin Earl “Scrubby” Rives (1898-1953), an attorney and later an innovative local judge (he was mentioned briefly in an interesting Time magazine piece, September 1948). He bought the property in 1926 and rented it out until selling it in 1935. He lived at 405 West Greenway North in Sunset Hills. He was an Army sergeant in World War I and a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General Detachment of the Army during World War II. He also served as a civilian aide to the secretary of the army after the war. The E. Earle Rives United States Army Reserve Center in Greensboro is named for him.
  • In 1948, William M. Duncan (1915-1991) bought the house, and it remained in his family for 68 years. William was manager of the Sam Bolton Company, a leather wholesaler. On his death, ownership passed to his wife, Mary Susan Herring Duncan (1914-2005), and then in 2004 to their son William Thomas Herring Duncan, who sold the house in 2016.

He bought the property in 1924, apparently before the house was built, from Southern Real Estate Company, one of the major local realty companies of the time. He was able to finance the house through Southern Real Estate and Gate City Building and Loan.
  • Thomas died in 1939, but the home stayed in the family until 2016.

• Note: The first owners were Aubrey P. and Georgia Garrison Lloyd, who bought the property in 1923. Aubrey (1883-1974) was the seventh of 10 children born to Atlas and Mary Jane Quackenbush Lloyd of White Cross in Orange County. He worked in a variety of jobs before buying the U-Save-It grocery store on West Market Street across from the county courthouse in 1939. “He carried many unusual ‘gourmet-type’ items and also Kosher meats and other foods which his customers appreciated,” his daughter said. Georgia was from the Stony Creek community in Alamance County, also the seventh of 10 children. She became a master milliner before she married Aubrey in 1921.
  • Their daughter, Cmdr. Rebecca Ann Lloyd (1929-2013), graduated from the Women’s College in 1950 and was in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, serving in Korea and Vietnam. She also worked for Adm. Hyman Rickover on the development of the first nuclear submarines. She retired in San Diego and worked in the commercial real estate business. Rebecca gave an endowment to UNCG for the establishment of the Lloyd Honors College, named for her mother.

  • After her husband’s death in 1927, Esther (1857-1942) bought the property from her son Hugh (1898-1992). She and, later, her daughter Minnie Myrtle Armfield (1880-1973) owned it until Minnie’s estate sold it in 1974. The Armfields had eight children, six of whom survived to adulthood.
  • Esther’s parents, Henry and Ann Wakefield, were born in England and may have been Quakers. They moved to Canada, where their nine children were born, and then to North Carolina.
